In the Jailhouse Now

The Dunbar Historical Society was fortunate to acquire a portion of one of the actual jail cells from the Dunbar police department.  The jail bars were manufactured by the Van Dorn Iron Works Company in Cleveland, Ohio.  The Van Dorn company began in 1872 in Akron, Ohio manufacturing wrought iron fencing.  By the 1910s, the company had moved to Cleveland and began designing and building prison equipment.  For several decades, they were the largest manufacturer of jail cells in the world, producing nearly 28,000 jail cells.  Click here for a complete history of the company and photos of the factory.
